What is a context window?

A context window is the limited amount of information AI can have in front of it while working on your request.

Think of it like a workbench. Your instructions, earlier messages, uploaded files, and other useful material all take up space on the bench. The AI uses what is there to build its next answer.

It is not the same as everything the AI learned during training, and it is not guaranteed permanent memory. When the bench gets crowded, older or less useful material may be trimmed, summarized, or simply become harder to use well.
